Abstract:
Alumina is widely used in various industries as supports, catalysts, and sorbents. Recently, a 5-coordinated ion of Al(III) has been found using 27Al NMR to occur beside 4- and 6-coordinated AI(III) ions bonded to oxygen. A new modification of alumina having AI(III) cations that are 4-, 5-, and 6-coordinated with respect to oxygen is called “π-Al2O3 /5,6/.” This chapter discusses the preparation procedure and existence conditions of π-Al2O3. The mechanochemical activation of the layered Al(III) trihydroxide involves (1) the crushing of granules and crystals, (2) the shift and azimuthal turn of hydroxyl packets with a cleavage of hydrogen bonds binding the packets, (3) the splitting of crystals into the plates with a minimal thickness up to 10 Å. 27Al NMR spectrum of a noncalcined X-ray amorphous hydroxide exhibits a singlet with a chemical shift 5 ppm, which corresponds to the 6-coordinated AI(III) ion. The adsorption properties of alumina with 4-, 5-, and 6-coordinated ions should differ from those of the oxide with only 4- and 6-coordinated Al(III). This is mostly due to the presence of two 5-coordinated Al(III) located side by side in π-Al2O3. These ions may be considered coupled Lewis centers.
