Abstract:
The infrared adsorption spectra of benzalacetophenone adsorbed on silica gel, silica-magnesia, and alumina-silica catalysts have been studied. The change with time in the adsorption coefficient of the band due to the physically adsorbed indicator is the same on all the adsorbents, whereas the change in the absorption coefficient of the band reflecting the total quantity of molecules of adsorbate on the surface depends on the nature of the catalysts. It is suggested that the surface hydroxyl groups do not take part in the formation of the acidic centers on which ionization of the adsorbed base takes place.
