Abstract:
The crystal structure of vanadomolybdophosphate heteropolyacids (HPA) H3+n [PMo12-nVnO40].mH2O, where
n = 2 (I) and 3 (II), and m = 30-36, has been studied. The structure of compound I was studied at temperatures of +23° (la) and -70° (Ib). The HPA I and II are isostructural, and crystallize in the tetragonal system, space group P4/mnc, Z = 2. The heteropolyanions (HPAn) in crystals I and II have a distorted "pseudo-Keggin" structure with crystallographic symmetry 4/m and local symmetry m3m. The Mo and V atoms are distributed randomly. The O=M bond is not directed towards an oxygen atom of the PO4 group, as in the Keggin structure, but to the P atom, and forms an angle of
157-160° with the M-Otrans bond. This creates rotational disorder in the position of the PO4 group in the HPAn: two equally probable orientations of the PO4 group appear, rotated relative to one another through 90° . Since the MO6 octahedron in this case is joined with equal probability to four neighbors both along the edge and at the apex, the distinction of the M3O13 triad in the pseudo-Keggin structure loses its significance. The H20 molecules in compounds I and II form an independent three-dimensional framework, consisting of infinite chains with a periodicity of 22 molecules per cell. The chains are extended along the z axis and are situated in tunnels of diameter ~6.5A.
