Abstract:
Thin-walled carbon tubules were produced from a polyethylene precursor in the presence of an Fe catalyst uniformly distributed in the bulk of the polymer at 750°C under a nitrogen flow. The mechanism of their formation was found to involve the decomposition of the polyethylene precursor on the catalyst particles at 600°C leading to the formation of disordered carbon shells. The structure of the resulting tubules was not damaged during the purification by the treatment in an acid solution.
