Abstract:
Combined STM and XPS were used to study the electrochemical deposition of platinum nanocolloids with an organic shell (hydrosol) on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The platinum colloid has a quaternary ammonium stabilizer. By STM observations it is shown that a stable and highly dispersed state of adsorbed platinum on graphite supports can be obtained by electrochemical deposition of platinum hydrosol. This process includes the electrochemical oxidation of the support. It leads to high platinum surface coverage, much higher than that obtained by dipping techniques.
