Abstract:
The studies in the field of fuel cells and their components have currently reached a new level mostly relating to applied R&D activities in view of the prospects to achieve a zero emission level in automotive industry due to the potential full exploration of their capacities. Certain advances are observed in the development of hydrogen fuel cells competitive with internal combustion engines. Some automotive manufacturers are already implementing hydrogen fuel cells, electric motors and commercially available vehicles based thereon.
The basic components responsible for hydrogen fuel cell productivity are membrane and catalyst. Perfluorinated proton conducting membranes (Nafion and its analogs, their different modifications as well as recently developed membranes with shortened side chains such as Aquivion) are found to be mostly efficient for the application in aggressive media in fuel cells.
This report presents a comparison of the main performances (equivalent weight, proton conductivity, molecular weight, water content) and thin structure characterization for membranes similar to Nafion and Aquivion (with shortened side chains) obtained in our laboratory using a novel water-emulsion copolymerization process developed by our research group [1,2].
Aspects relating to the proton conductivity enhancement for the considered membranes, increase of their lifetime and extension of the optimal temperature range for their exploration are particularly discussed.
