A catalyzer is disclosed comprising a carrier with an active surface layer consisting of a molybdenum compound of the general formula: /A/-[Mo pi OMLX(H2O)Y], where A represents the surface atoms of the carrier material, L represents a ligand in the form of a compound from which protons have been removed such as H2O, a mineral acid, carboxylic acid, an alcohol or diketone, pi is an integer between 1 and 3; M is an integer between 0 and 4, X is an integer between 0 and 6, Y is an integer between 0 and 6; and a nickel or cobalt compound of the formula: [MeDz].Lp, where Me represents a nickel or cobalt cation, D represents H2O or NH3, L represents a ligand like the one referred to above ; z is an integer between 0 and 6, p is an integer between 1 and 4. The molybdenum compound is present in quantities of 3 to 40 wt %, the nickel (or cobalt) compound in quantities of 1-30 wt %, and the carrier accounts for the remainder. In order to produce such a catalyzer the carrier is treated with a solution of a molybdenum compound of the general formula: Catf -[MokOpLs(H2O)t], where Cat represents at least one of the following cations: H<+>, NH<+>4, N2H<+>5, Na<+>, K<+> and Ba<2+>, L represents a ligand like the one referred to above, f is an integer between 0 and 3, k is an integer between 1 and 3, p is an integer between 0 and 4, s is an integer between 1 and 4, t is an integer between 0 and 6, and a solution of a nickel or cobalt compound of the general formula: [MeDz]-Lp, where Me represents a nickel or cobalt cation, D represents H2O or NH3, L represents a ligand like the one referred to above, z is an integer between 0 and 6, p is an integer between 1 and 4. The said treatment is carried out at a pH of 1 to 14 and a temperature of 0 to 100 °C, the carrier then being washed and dried.
