FIELD: catalytic processes in chemical industry.
SUBSTANCE: in terms of searching compounds possessing high catalytic activity, magnesium-cobalt intermetallic compound hydride has been found to be efficient in catalyzing acetylene to ethylene hydrogenation. For this, magnesium and cobalt metal powders are mixed followed by mechanical activation of resulting mixture and consequent heating under hydrogen atmosphere to obtain compound having formula Mg2CoH5.. Catalyst allows acetylene to ethylene conversion to be increased by 44%.
EFFECT: enhanced catalyst activity.
