The title method comprises reducing H2SO4 to S-contg. gas in the presence of a catalyst at an elevated temp. To simplify the process and ensure a high degree of redn. to H2S, the starting acid is reduced on an Al-Co-Mo catalyst at 350-700° using H-contg. gas as a reducing agent. The redn. is performed with a 4-5:1 vol. ratio of reducing agent to H2SO4 and the contact time is 0.3-0.5 s.
