The porous C, consisting of a 3-dimensional matrix and having pore vol. 0.2-1.7 cm3/g, is formed from C layers having thickness and radius of curvature 100-10,000 Å, and has d. 1.80-2.10 g/cm3 and max. pore size 200-2000 Å. This porous C has high strength and pore vol., and is esp. suitable as adsorbent and catalyst support. Thus, 100 g carbon black was treated for 1 h at 900° in a 50/50 wt.% butane-propane mixt. flowing at 176 L/h, and then with steam for 1 h. The resulting C had relative strength 43, pore vol. 1.70 g/cm3, layer thickness 200-5000 Å, radius of curvature 200-5000 Å, max. pore size 1000 Å, and d. 2.02 g/cm3.
