By the ESR method it was found that interaction of o-xylene and oxygen with a V2O5−TiO2 system results in the formation of a substitutional solid solution of V4+ in rutile. It is assumed that under steady state conditions of the catalytic oxidation of o-xylene vanadium exists as a solid solution of V3+ in TiO2, and that the promoting role of TiO2 consists in stabilizing vanadium in its lower oxidation states by forming solid solutions of V3+ and V4+ ions in the rutile lattice.
