Effect of nanomaterials on the cytokines levels and modulation of the behavior is still not clear. In the previous clinical studies, it has been shown that IL-6, IL-10 and interferon-gamma were related to manic, remission and depression phases of psychiatric disorders, respectively. In the following study, the possible effect of two types of carbon nanofibers (CNF) on the interleukin concentrations as a result of pathobehavioral alterations were evaluated. CNF were synthesized in Boreskov Institute of Catalysis of SB RAS (Novosibirsk) by catalytic decomposition of propane – butane mixture (C3-C4) using heterogeneous catalyst 90%NiO + 10%Al2 which was prepared by method of the coprecipitation of nitrates of nickel and aluminum. Experiments were carried out with 45 male Wistar rats weighing 150–200 g. Animals were fed with CNF containing feed with a dose of 500 mg/kg of total weight for 14 days. Open-field test, elevated plus-maze test, Grigoryev's universal problem-solving box (GUPSB) were used for the estimation of behavioral changes and also serum interleukins IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β, IL-10, IL-18 concentrations were determined. CNF treatment significantly elevated the serum IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10 levels of rats (for all, control vs. treatment groups, p < 0.05). These data indicated the development of inflammatory processes after 10 days. In this model, exposure to CNF resulted in the alteration of the cytokine profile and behavior that may be similar to the psychiatric disturbances with manic and despressive episodes.
