Microwave energy assistance in heterogeneous gas-phase catalytic reactions is a relatively new field of investigation that needs more evidence to explain the difference between microwave and classical conventional heating. In the present research, heterogeneous gas-phase oxidn. of 2-methylpyridine in the presence of oxygen, nitrogen, and water vapor over vanadium-titanium oxide catalysts was studied. It was shown that in addn. to the previously proved advantages of microwave heating as low energy consumption, fast heating and cooling of the reaction unit, also strong influence of hydrodynamic and kinetic parameters on the temp. profile in the catalyst particles can be obsd. Unique temp. distribution changes the limiting step of the catalytic reaction improving selectivities for the main partial oxidn. products: 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde and picolinic acid, two essential intermediates to many nutritional supplements, and decreasing amts. of CO2and condensation products.Addn. of molybdenum to the binary vanadium-titanium oxide system facilitates further improvements allowing get even higher selectivity for picolinic acid in the microwave heated reactor.
