Highly dispersed 0.5 nm Pt-Re particles with atomic ratio of 1:2 were formed on the support surface, where platinum is metallic, while rhenium is partially oxidized (Re1+ or Re2+). The study of reaction kinetics in combination with in situ FTIR showed that i) the degree of acid oligomerization is very high and rises with concentration, and as the temperature decrease; ii) the activity linearly increases with the number of Pt-ReOX centers, and the highest one was really achieved at Pt:Re close to 0.5 (Fig. 1B, the cross-point), as follows from EDX. The superstoichiometric platinum forms only large and low-active Pt particles. We believe that neighboring Pt–ORe atoms in Pt-ReOx supported catalyst act as the Ru-NPy acid-base pair in pincer complexes, which heterolytically dissociate dihydrogen with generation of Pt hydride for efficient hydrogenation of the carbonyl group to alcohol one.
High TOFs (> 100 h-1), selectivities (ca. 99%) and stability of Pt-ReOx catalyst in hydrogenation of carboxylic and amino acids, which are close to those of the homogeneous catalyst, were revealed at low temperatures (75-130C). The hydrogenation of malic acid and alanine occured on two orders of magnitude faster than their racemization that allowed to obtain chemically and optically (ee > 99%) pure reaction products.
