The kinetics and mechanism of chem. reactions in the system NH4ClO4-polystyrene-Fe2O3 were studied to simulate thermal decomposition and combustion as well as the catalysis of these processes of the condensed system NH4ClO4-polymer binder-catalyst. The effect of the NH4ClO4 particle size (4-300 250-400 μ), the ratio of NH4ClO4 and polystyrene, temperature (305-90°), pressure (15 torr, 1 atm.) concentration of the catalyst Fe2O3 (2.5-12.5%) on kinetic regularities and parameters of the decomposition of rich and stoichiometric (8:1) NH4Clo4:polystyrene mixtures was studied. The thermal decomposition of these systems is a multistage process. The stages are reactions of HClO4 (primary product of NH4ClO4 dissociation) with polystyrene and condensed products of this interaction. This conclusion is verified by experiments on the reaction kinetics of HClO4 with polystyrene. Under the conditions of the decomposition of mixtures with NH4ClO4 250-400 μ the stages of HClO4 diffusion from the NH4ClO4 surface through the polymer film and its simultaneous reaction with the latter are the limiting stages. A model of thermal decomposition of the NH4ClO4-polystyrene-catalyst system is based on these data.
