PURPOSE: To obtain a porous carbonaceous material excellent in mechanical strength, large in volume of narrow pores having more than a specified diameter and suitable for catalyst, etc. by supplying a carbon-containing compd. to a heating layer of the carbonaceous material to pyrolytically decompose and, then treating the material with an activating agent.
CONSTITUTION: The porous carbonaceous material has a three-dimensional matrix having 0.1-1.7 cm3/g narrow pore volume, and the matrix is formed of bent carbon layers having 100-10000 Å thickness and a 100-10000 Å radius of curvature. The true density of the material is 1.8-2.0 g/cm3, its X-ray density is 2.112-2.236 g/cm3 and the pore size distribution has its maximum within the range of 200-2000 Å. In the production of the porous carbonaceous material, the carbon-containing compd. is supplied to the mixed layer of a granular carbon material heated to 750-1200°C to deposit pyrolytically decomposed carbon on the carbonaceous material by pyrolysis and then the treatment with the activating agent is executed.
