Abstract:
Semiquantitative estimates indicate that the heterogeneous photochemical reactions on tropospheric aerosols of the oxide nature can strongly affect the global chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere. It seems likely that these reactions influence the intensity of acid rain, govern the concentration of some greenhouse and ozone-destructive gases, and remove harmful compounds from the atmosphere. Thus, deserts, which are the main suppliers of continental dust to the atmosphere, probably act as purifying ''kidneys'' of our planet.
