Abstract:
The photocatalytic oxidation of the methyl viologen bication (MV(2+)) in an aqueous suspension of TiO2 saturated with air is investigated under conditions of steady-state photolysis. The effect of the H2O2 concentration (ranging from 0 to 10(-2) mol/l) and pH of the solution (ranging from 5.6 to 11) on the initial rate of MV(2+) oxidation is examined. The dependences of the initial rate of MV(2+) oxidation on the solution pH with and without H2O2 are found to be similar, both of them correlating with the MV(2+) amount adsorbed on the photocatalyst surface. Addition of H2O2 leads to an increase in the initial rate of the photocatalytic oxidation of MV(2+), which correlates with the rate of the photocatalytic decomposition of H2O2 on TiO2 at a fixed pH value of the solution. A conclusion is drawn about the independent reaction routes for MV(2+) oxidation with and without H2O2 that nevertheless involve the adsorbed MV(2+) forms and, apparently, the same forms of the primary photogenerated oxidants.
