An IR Spectroscopic Study of Interaction between H2S and O2 on the Surface of V2O5/γ-Al2O3 Catalysts

Interaction of H2S with O2 on the surface of V2O5/γ-Al2O3 catalysts was studied by the method of IR spectroscopy. The character of adsorption of H2S was shown to substantially depend on the content of V2O5. For the catalyst with a low content of V2O5 (3.5 wt %), two types of H2S adsorption (physical and dissociative) were observed. Along with V2O5, an important role in chemisorption of H2S was played by Al2O3. At a V2O5 content of 14 wt %, only dissociative adsorption of H2S occurred, and sulfation was virtually absent in interaction of O2 with sulfidized catalyst surfaces.
