Abstract:
It was found that the observed first-order rate constant for the decomposition of aliphatic nitrocompounds RNO2 in supercritical water at constant temperature increases exponentially with the pressure. The volumes of activation for the reactions under study were determined. The experimental data were described within the framework of the transition-state theory. Conclusions on the nature of the activated complex have been drawn. The calculated values of the volume of activation for the decomposition of nitromethane, nitroethane, and 1-nitropropane in supercritical water are similar, a result indicative of the same nature of the activated complex in all three cases. The true rate constant for the decomposition of these nitrocompounds in supercritical water decreases virtually linearly in the series NM > NE > NP.
