Abstract:
The absorption and oxidation of methanol on Ag(111) has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy. He II Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS) has been employed for adsorbed monolayers and condensed multilayers of methanol on the surface at 95 K, and relatively small shifts are found. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) was also employed and shows that for thick multilayers an enhanced intensity for the carbon 1s compared to the oxygen 1s occurs which can be explained by simple considerations of the escape depth. XPS has also been employed during annealing and suggests on the order of a tenth of a monolayer of decomposition products. Larger coverages of surface intermediates were observed with XPS when active oxygen was initially on the surface. The intermediates include formaldehyde, methoxide, and possibly hemiacetyl alcoholate. The observation of formaldehyde implies a desorption limited formation step contrary to earlier published work. The kinetics of the oxidation reaction can be described by a simple Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism with rate parameters v=10-9 cm2 and E=8.7 kcal/mol.
