Abstract:
The reaction kinetics of water oxidation by Ru(bpy)33+ in the presence of Co(III) and Fe(III) colloidal hydroxides are studied as a function of pH, catalyst concentration and simple and complex salt additives. It was found that the kinetics of O2 formation and that of oxidant consumption differ due to side oxidation reactions. A reaction mechanism taking into account the ion exchange properties of the catalyst surface hydroxo groups and suggesting dioxygen formation on two neighbouring catalytically active centres is proposed.
