Abstract:
The results of 1H and 13C NMR as well as kinetic studies of the reaction between CH3OH and H2S over a number of solid catalysts (SiO2, H3PO4/SiO2, NaX, NaY and H-ZSM-5 zeolites) are presented. The adsorbed methanol forms methoxy groups on H3PO4/SiO2 and presumably on H-ZSM-5 catalysts while for SiO2, NaX and NaY only physically adsorbed methanol molecules are found on the catalyst surface. The 1H and 13C NMR spectra in combination with the kinetic data indicate that the adsorbed CH3OH reacts with SH− species and H2S molecules, the former being more reactive.
