Abstract:
For environmentally friendly industrial carbonylation of olefins and alcs. via the Koch reaction it is of great significance to substitute solid acids for liq. mineral acids as catalysts and to carry out the reaction at ambient temp. and atm. pressure. With 13C CP/MAS NMR as the main anal. method, we have shown that tert-Bu alc. or isobutylene is readily transformed into trimethylacetic acid at 296 K without application of pressurized conditions, just upon coadsorption of the alc. and CO or olefin, CO and water in equiv. amts. on zeolite H-ZSM-5. Thus, the Koch reaction can be carried out for tert-BuOH and iso-C4H8 with high yield (50-85%) at room temp. and atm. pressure on the acidic form of a zeolite.
