Abstract:
The formation of surface methoxides from adsorbed methanol is shown to proceed by different mechanisms with catalysts for the complete (Cr2O3) and partial (Cr-Mo-O) oxidation of methanol. On Cr2O3 the activation of the alcohol takes place by a heterolytic mechanism, with participation of nucleophilic surface oxygen and the formation of CH3O- species stabilized on Lewis acid centers. In the case of Cr-Mo oxides the formation of methoxides occurs with participation of mobile surface protons.
