Abstract:
The state of Cu, Ni, and (Cu + Ni) chromite catalysts has been studied during their reduction in H2 at 150 and 300°C. X-ray phase analysis showed formation of metallic Cu and Ni, the latter at higher temperatures than the Cu, and formation in every case of a defect spinel (from chromates) and Ni oxides. The ESCA method confirmed these data and gave a detailed picture of the reduction, showing that the surface of the specimens is depleted in Cu2+ and Ni2+ compared with their bulk; as well as metallic Cu, Cu+ ions are formed during the reduction and increase in their concentration coincides with increase in activity of the catalyst in hydrogenation processes of C=O bonds.
