Abstract:
IR spectroscopy has been used in determining the reasons for the deactivating effect of excess concentrations of CO and O2 on the conversion of NO in the reaction of NO+CO+O2 on Pt/γ-Al2O3. It has been established that, in mixtures with excess CO, the active component of the catalyst is present in the form of the metal, and the low NO conversion is due to the formation of strongly bonded Pt-CO carbonyl complexes that hinder the chemisorption of NO. When O2 is added in the amount required to bring the ratio of oxidizing and reducing components up to m equals 1. 15, the NO conversion increases. This work is pertinent to eliminating harmful components from automotive exhaust gas.
