Abstract:
Quantum chemical calculations, an IR spectroscopic experiment, and calculations of the frequencies of the normal vibrations show that in the adsorption of an ammonia molecule on HNaY zeolite, an ammonium ion is formed, possessing two strong hydrogen bonds to the surface. It is concluded that both acid and basic sites of the surface participate in the formation of the ammonium ion: interaction with the basic site plays a role in the energetics of this process analogous to the effect of solvation in the liquid phase. On this basis an interpretation is given of the calorimetric data on the adsorption of a number of amides on HNaY zeolite.
