Abstract:
Oxidation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) by O2 in the presence of H3+nPMo12−nVnO40 heteropoly acids (HPA-n) in AcOH−H2O yields up to 86% 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-ben-zoquinone (TMBQ) with 100% conversion of TMP. 2,2′,3, 3′,6,6′-Hexamethyl-4,4′-biphenol (BP) was isolated as an intermediate in this reaction. VO2+ ions formed due to the HPA-n dissociation, are suggested to be the active species of the catalyst.
