Abstract:
Lessons are drawn from the work of molecular biologists who have succeeded in elucidating the mechanisms of many enzymatic processes from X-ray crystallographic analyses of data recorded on the catalyst-reactant system prior to and after catalytic reaction. The use of in situ infrared spectroscopy to clarify the processes of adsorption and catalytic reactions on uniform heterogeneous catalysts is exemplified through a series of studies of the dehydration of the four isomers of butanol over H-ZSM-5.
