Abstract:
Secondary needle-shaped crystals were prepared from FeCl3 and NaOH solutions, aged up to 36 hr. at 95° and studied by the electron-microscopic and electron-diffraction methods. The crystals are extended along the c axis and consist of single-crystal blocks with the smallest dimension ∼40 Å. The block disorientation in the transverse direction exceeds the disorientation angle along the needle. For thicknesses ≤100 Å, the needles are joint growths of thinner needles along the hk0 planes. Three types of H2O exist in the crystals: water in the structure of single-crystal α-FeOOH blocks as OH groups, and nonstoichiometric H2O contained in the intergrowths along the needles and in areas where fine needles grow together.
