Abstract:
It has recently been shown [1,2] that the degree of aggregation of copper ions in MgO and in CuNaY zeolites determines substantially the catalytic activity of these catalysts during the oxidation of H 2 and CO. Evidence of the various degrees of aggregation of Cu 2+ ions has been obtained by ESR [2, 3] and diffuse reflection spectroscopic [4] methods. Expansion of the range of objects of investigation and the inclusion of catalysts containing other transition-metal ions in them, and the finding of a criterion of aggregation of high-spin ions are of undoubted interest.
For this purpose we chose the NiO-MgO system, for which there are numerous results on the distribution of the Ni 2+ ions from magnetic susceptibility [5] and ESR spectra [6-8] data. The widespread opinion [5-8] concerning the substantial aggregation of Ni 2+ ions in MgO even at an extremely low concentration has not been substantiated for us and requires additional refinement. The aggregates of nickel ions probably with an oxygen bridge atom between the Ni 2+ cations
(Ni--O-Ni) can be determined in the ESR spectra from the forbidden transition with Am = 2 and the change in the shape of the line of the principal transition [9], and from the optical spectra by the lifting of the forbiddeness from the intercombination transitions [10]. These two methods
were chosen as the principal ones to study the solid NiO-MgO solution.
