Abstract:
It is known [1] that various metal oxides are capable of catalyzing isotope exchange in molecular oxygen at room temperature and lower temperatures. A detailed study of the kinetics of this process [2] has indicated that the reaction involves the participation of oxygen adsorbed in molecular form. The detection of ion-radical forms of adsorbed oxygen led some authors to the conclusion that the reactive oxygen is present on the surface in the form of ion-radicals.
In an earlier paper [1] it was shown that 02- ion-radicals are not intermediate active forms in the homomolecular exchange of oxygen on deposited titanium silicate catalysts. The present paper describes a study of the nature of the reactive forms of adsorbed oxygen by ESR and infrared spectroscopy. The reactivity of oxygen was determined from the low--temperature homomolecular exchange of oxygen. The material chosen for study was titanium dioxide.
