Catalysts were prepd. by the co-pptn. of Fe3+ and Cr3+ ions from aq. solns. under conditions that caused different hydration of the resulting mixed Fe-Cr oxides. After calcination the resulting catalysts had a high sp. surface area and were stable up to 500°, and showed high activity for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of hydrocarbons, as well as for the water-gas shift reaction after promotion with Cu. The prodn. of permeable membrane catalysts by use of this oxides together with Cu and K resulted in low activities due to redn. of the hematite by CO.
