Abstract:
The phase-structural changes of the porous electrode, which was in contact with the solid oxide electrolyte yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) under the influence of current passing through the electrochem. cell was studied using novel XRPD technique. The study was carried out on the D 500 S diffractometer with HTK-10 Anto PAAR high-temp. camera modified for simultaneous registration of x-ray and electrochem. characteristics under the operational conditions. The state of the Ag electrode was investigated in the cell with non-sepd. electrode spaces air, Ag|ZrO2(10% Y2O3)| Ag, air at the electrochem. oxygen oxidn.-redn. reaction. In contrary to the cathodic polarization the anodic polarization causes significant transformations in the Ag electrode. These transformations are seen in chaotic oscillative redistribution of silver line intensities, their reverse broadening and splitting. Furthermore, the "oscillation" amplitude and frequency increase with the rise of current and cease at switching off. The phenomena is due to the changes of the focusing conditions of the x-rays diffracting on large silver crystallites (>1500 Å) in the external porous electrode layer at the expense of oxygen "bubbles" formation on the Ag electrode-YSZ interface, on which a thin (under 5 μm) close-fitting to YSZ Ag film exists (on the scanning microscopy data).
