Determination of the Composition and Structure of Paramagnetic Coordination Compounds in Solutions from Data on the Spin Relaxation of Their Nuclei

The theory and practice of the application of nuclear spin relaxation methods
to the establishment of the composition and structure of labile paramagnetic
complexes of transition metals directly in solutions have been considered.
The factors which complicate the determination of structural characteristics
from data on the paramagnetic relaxation rates of the nuclei of metal complexes
in solutions have been analyzed. The real possibilities of paramagnetic
relaxation in the measurement of these characteristics have been determined
on the basis of this analysis, and a strategy for carrying out such measurements
has been formulated. Examples of the study of the structure of complexes
of transition metals by nuclear spin relaxation in real chemical and biological
systems have been given.
