Physicochemical properties of microspheres of flue ash of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk power station were studied. The phase composition of the microspheres is represented by a mixture of phases: mullite Al6Si2О13, quartz SiO2 and amorphous glass phase with the prevalence of mullite. The possibility to use this material as a sorbent is considered. The maximal capacity with respect to oil products was determined to reach 100 mass %. Experiments on the extraction of oil products from model polluted water were carried out. The degree of water purification from the surface oil product layer is 99.99 mass %. The effect of high-temperature treatment of microspheres on sorption capacity with respect to oil products was studied. It was demonstrated that the optimal temperature for thermal treatment is 250 °C, while after calcination at a temperature of 400 and 600 °C the material loses the ability to collect oil film from water surface.
