Abstract:
An arc-discharge system for fullerene synthesis was developed, and concentration profiles of light hydrocarbons and atomic carbon were measured at various stages of the process. The yield of soot and fullerenes was evaluated as a function of time. According to electron microscopy data, the material deposited on cold parts of the system contained amorphous carbon and ''light'' soot particles-single-shell carbon structures of dimensions similar to 1000 Angstrom. The formation of light soot is tentatively attributed to the presence of hydrogen in the reaction chamber.
