Al2O3.3H2O was decompd. in a fluidized bed of 4 × 4 mm Al cylinders at 350-600° for 0.05-0.5 s. This produces amorphous Al(OH)3 which is then digested with enough H2O to make the Al content equiv. to 100-500 g/L Al2O3. The pH was adjusted to 5-12 and the temp. held at 20-100° for 0.5-10 h. The solids were sepd. and washed to reduce the Na content to 0.02% as Na2O. Control of the pH and the other digestion parameters dets. which of various mixts. of pseudoboehmite, bayerite, nordstrandite, and amorphous Al(OH)3 is produced. The solids are formed into granules, dried, and calcined at 400-600° to yield activated Al2O3 with the following range of phys. properties: sp. surface 270-390 m2/g total pore vol. 0.45-0.90 cm3/g, predominant radii of the pores 40-104 Å, and crush strength 50-180 kg/cm2. Activated Al2O3 is used as a catalyst, catalyst carrier, and adsorbent.
