As a first step in the preparation of copper/zinc mixed-oxide catalysts the basic salts of the metals are co-precipitated from the mixed nitrate solutions by addition of alkali. Usually such coprecipitates are a mixture of different types of basic salts and it is difficult to understand the effect of individual components upon the characteristics of the catalyst when the coprecipitates are thermally decomposed to oxide. In the present investigation a single-phase coprecipitate has been prepared and characterised by different physical and chemical techniques. The aim is to find a correlation between the structure of the coprecipitate and the properties of the mixed oxide obtained therefrom.
