The possibility of using chloroform and CO2 molecules as probes for studying the basic properties of the surface is investigated. Spectral parameters of surface species formed upon adsorption of these molecules on the surface of oxides are analyzed. It is shown that chloroform may be used as a rough probe suitable for testing only an averaged state of the surface basic centers, whereas the CO2 molecule allows one to estimate the total content of the surface basic sites and to differentiate them according to their nature and strength. For a number of oxides, surface basic centers are distinguished and their basic properties are elucidated. A spectral measure of the strength of basic centers is proposed.
