The kinetics of aging of Al hydroxide was studied. The nonaged precipitate obtained at pH 6 and 20° is amorphous and has the composition Al4O2(OH)7(NO3). The weakly crystallized hydroxide, containing appreciable amounts of basic salts, has a poorly developed surface and an ultrafine pore structure. Precipitation at high pH and temperatures, especially under continuum conditions, yields an Al hydroxide with highly developed surface (300-350 m2/g) which is retained even after prolonged aging. The character of the porous structure, the surface area, and the thermal stability of Al2O3 depend on the phase composition of the hydroxide (e.g., boehmite or bayerite).
