The results from laboratory studies and pilot tests of the process of the catalytic reduction of sulfur dioxide are presented and discussed. The possibility of the low-temperature reduction of SO2 to elemental sulfur by methane and synthesis gas at 230–250°C on the developed CuCr-AlO catalyst is shown. Pilot operational life tests confirm the high activity and stability of this catalyst. It is concluded that the low-temperature reduction of sulfur dioxide by synthesis gas has certain advantages over the homogeneous catalytic reduction of sulfur dioxide by methane.
