The modification of the Pd/Al2O3 catalysts by gold considerably increases their catalytic activity in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene. The "turnover frequency" on the Pd-Au/Al2O3 bimetallic catalysts is 3–4 times higher than that of the monometallic samples. The increase in catalytic activity is more pronounced at the second step of diphenylethylene hydrogenation to diphenylethane. According to the data of IR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO, the observed effect is related to an increase in the electron density on the Pd atoms in the bimetallic samples.
