Liquid-phase hydrogenation of carboxylic acids is a crucial component of a number of strategies for the conversion of biomass into fuels and chemicals. The reaction products, alcohols, are widely used in industry as running resins, plasticizers, cosmetics, etc. This process is catalyzed by bimetallic Pt-Sn catalyst occurred under severe reaction conditions (T ≤ 300C and P ≤ 300 bar) with an alcohol selectivity up to 75% only. Recently, pronounced performance was shown by the metal-organic pincer-type Ru-complexes showing at T ≤ 100C and P ≤ 50 bar the almost 100% alcohol selectivity due to heterolytic activation of the molecular hydrogen. Here, we tried to make on the TiO2 surface the Pt-ReOx species of atomic dispersion to get the similar catalyst performance in hydrogenation of fatty acids under mild reaction conditions. As a result, at low temperatures (90-1300C) the high TOFs (up to 40 h-1) and selectivities (up to 99%) in hydrogenation of hexanoic and malic acids were demonstrated which are close to those of the homogeneous catalyst. The first order kinetics towards target and side reactions described well the kinetic data obtained in a wide range of reaction conditions. Finally, the Pt-ReOX/TiO2 catalyst revealed high stability during at least 5 recycles for 20 hours. The hydrogenation rate of malic acid on two orders of magnitude is higher than that of its racemization. The revealed kinetic dependencies of both reaction rates on temperature, concentration and pH values allowed us to find optimal conditions for preparation not only chemically but optically pure products with enantiomeric excess more than 99%.
