Abstract:
The mechanism of selective aldehyde oxidation to carboxylic acids catalyzed by oxide catalysts is discussed by the example of acrolein oxidation to acrylic acid. The multistep mechanism is determined, which involves consecutive transformation of the coordinatively bound aldehyde into carbonyl-bound aldehyde and symmetrical carboxylate with participation of lattice oxygen. Analysis of the structure, energetic characteristics, and acid-base properties of intermediate species, initial aldehyde, and reaction products formed the basis for the principles of designing the active surface. These principles take into account the acidity of the site responsible for the stabilization of a specific intermediate species and the energy of an oxygen-surface bond.
