Abstract:
It was found that the presence of a common intermediate in a system with several parallel catalytic processes can substantially affect the selectivity and even reverse the direction of chemical reactions because of thermodynamic coupling of the catalytic processes. The mutual effect of coupled processes can be described by the modified Onsager equations in which the differences of the thermodynamic heads (that exponentially depend on the chemical potentials) of the reactants and the products of catalytic reactions play a role of thermodynamic forces. As a particular example, kinetic and thermodynamic criteria were derived whose fulfillment provides the absence of catalyst coking in the course of carbon dioxide conversion of methane.
