Abstract:
Submicronic hollow particles differ from other types of polymer spheres in their ability to effectively scatter visible light, which determines a major area of their use as a white pigment. The benefits of using hollow spheres as aqueous dispersions are demonstrated. The physicochemical properties of hollow spheres are discussed mainly from the standpoint of their application in pigmented polymer compositions. Other application areas are also considered. The most promising methods for the preparation of submicron-sized hollow spheres are synthetic processes in which a precursor of a hollow particle is a vesicle, a multiple emulsion, a miniemulsion, a uniform polymer particle, or a core-shell particle. The hollow-formation mechanisms and the advantages and disadvantages of various synthetic procedures are discussed.
