Abstract:
Using modern physical methods in conjunction with the kinetic relaxation method, the nature of the active component of vanadium sulfoxide catalysts and the mechanism of sulfur dioxide oxidation are investigated. It is determined that molten V2O5-M2S2O7 (M = K, Na) consists of polynuclear (binuclear) V(V) complexes of octahedral coordination with the formation of (pyrosulfate) ligands. A simple scheme is presented for the formation of coordinationally unsaturated vanadium complexes active in the catalysis. It is shown that the catalytic conversion takes place with the participation of only the V(V) compounds. A detailed scheme is presented for the mechanism of the catalytic reaction.
