Abstract:
Our generic kinetic model describes the interplay of voltage pulses and gene expression in neurons with emphasis on miRNA. Under steady-state conditions, the kinetics under consideration exhibit a unique steady state if the types of regulation of membrane channels and gene transcription into miRNA are similar, while for opposite regulations the kinetics may be bistable. The miRNA diffusion via gap junctions is shown to be able to synchronize and stabilize the kinetics in an array of bistable neurons. With minor modifications (e.g., introducing the delay steps into gene expression), our model is able to predict kinetic oscillations occurring on the time scale longer than a few minutes.
